Often referred to as "the trial that changed South Africa,” in October 1963, ten leading opponents of apartheid went on trial for their lives on charges of sabotage against the South African government. Nelson Mandela, one of the accused, would be convicted and go on to serve 27 years of a life sentence. Many hail Mandela as a non-violent revolutionary who campaigned for equal rights, while others view him as a violent transgressor.
