From Mr. Ryan Burke- Vice Principal of Student Life and Well-Being
Welcome to the high school! You are now joining a long line of caring, inspiring, and active students and teachers, and I am so excited for you to be taking this journey as the class of '26. We encourage you to jump in with both feet! Get to know your teachers, our host staff, and the students in the upper grades. You are now part of a large community of care and we are so very happy to have you.
From Mr. Ryan Campbell- Vice Principal of Curriculum and Learning
It is with very great pleasure that I welcome you to the High School, Let's begin at the end, I want you to imagine yourselves striding across our graduation stage at the end of Grade 12 ready to go into the world. So how did you get to that point? You began in Grade 9, as you are all doing now, by leaning in and setting the habits of success that will stand you in good stead throughout high school. You got your self-organized, used your honor passes wisely, and made sure you were on top of your work. You experimented as Grade 9 has a huge array of creative arts options, and you took learning beyond the classroom walls by engaging fully with service learning and sports. As you did so well in Grade 9, you then felt in a really strong position to excel with the increased option choices in Science and Social Studies that come your way in Grade 10. From there you coped easily with the challenging external courses on offer in Grades 11 and 12 all because you had wisely built strongly positive habits for learning in Grade 9. What is the moral of the story? Grade 9 isn't really your freshman year, it's your foundation year as with all buildings, the stronger the foundations the greater the final construction will be. Embrace Grade 9, try and learn everything you can both inside and outside the classroom, and most of all, have a wonderful year.
From Ms. Darby Davis- Activities Director

From Ms. Jodi Berry- Service Learning Coordinator
I'm thrilled you'll be joining us in the high school! There are so many ways to get involved in meaningful ways, and I look forward to working with you over the next four years. Do you have interests in supporting women entrepreneurs, protecting the rights of children, or using business to improve human development? You might be interested in joining a club in one of eight networks: athletics, creative arts, children, environment, inclusion outreach, industry and technology, social challenges, and women. These networks each include five service clubs that support organizations, communities, and projects working to positively impact the lives of people around Indonesia, Jakarta, and JIS. Whether you're taking on a club leadership role or doing field research on water purification, service in the high school is tied to learning and action outside the classroom. If you're interested in working and learning alongside other caring changemakers, find an issue that you want to understand and join a club to make a difference.
Mr. Adrian Brink
Hello G9's, and welcome to the start of your high school journey!
This is where the fun really starts, and you will have the opportunity to join a multitude of teams, clubs, and activities. I want to encourage you to go beyond your comfort zone, try everything, and invest yourself fully in our schol community. When you graduate four years from now, you do not want to look back on your time in the high school with any regrets.
I'm in the HS PE office, so come find me there if you need anything or want to hang out... We usually have snacks!
Let's GO!!
Ms. Sara Burke
Welcome to high school Grade 9s!
Even though it was a very long time ago, I remember my freshman year as a special and memorable one. It was a year when I started learning more about myself-- my strengths, weaknesses, and passions. It will be a year of forming new relationships, maintaining old ones, and possibly saying “goodbye”; things I am sure you experienced at the end of 8th grade, whether at JIS or elsewhere in the world.
It will also be a year of finding your voice and place in high school. As you do this, just know that I am always willing to help you on that journey.
The High School Student Handbook offers a wealth of useful information to students and parents about our high school programs, policy, and expectations. Every member of the high school community should take some time to peruse its contents and the amazing opportunities afforded to us in the High School at JIS.
